What is the Great Reshuffling and why is it happening?

In recent months, a new name has evolved that serves as a succinct description of several post-pandemic trends sweeping society: “The Great Reshuffling.”

In August, 4.3 million people in the United States resigned, accounting for 3% of the workforce. Something unusual and important is happening among American employees in the aftermath of the pandemic.

The majority of analysts have dubbed this phenomenon “the Great Resignation,” but not everyone feels that this popular phrase accurately describes what’s going on among employees. While a large number of individuals are leaving at the moment, numerous top CEOs argue that calling this period “the Great Reshuffle” is a better way to convey labor’s present review of priorities and ambitions.

Experts have speculated many reasons for this phenomenon, but according to a research by Gallup: the No. 1 reason people change jobs is for career growth opportunities.

“The single biggest decision you make in your job—bigger than all the rest—is who you name manager. When you name the wrong person manager, nothing fixes that bad decision. Not compensation, not benefits—nothing.”

Turning managers into leaders

Great managers are more effective at reducing turnover than anyone else in your company. In fact, prior to the epidemic, Gallup Panel data revealed that most employees need a wage raise of roughly 20% to be pulled away from managers who engage them.

Managers must consider more than just modifying their work-from-home policy or providing incentives. Workers want to know that their values are aligned with their job, not just that they are treated fairly.
