Creating meaningful connections through learning

A lot of people ask us “What’s different about Lingo Live? There are so many other competitors in this space.” The core of what we do is Lingo Live’s mission: connecting people through learning.

This seems like such a simple concept. But  connecting people isn’t just a matter of bridging Point A to Point B.

While working on a deal in Mexico at GE, I realized my high-school Spanish wasn’t going to cut it. My schedule was too busy for in-person classes and the e-learning programs I tried just weren’t working for me. So I responded to a Craigslist ad for Skype lessons posted by a woman in Guatemala.

As my friendship with my coach Kathe Solares grew, I became fluent in Spanish. I found I could confidently express myself in groups of native speakers. I wondered why there wasn’t any online language program out there based on one-on-one relationships, like the one I had with Kathe. And in 2012, I created Lingo Live.

The personal relationship that I developed with Kathe was what motivated me to start this company. We aren’t just connecting service providers and customers. Our learners consistently speak to the value of the relationship they’ve developed with their instructor. We’re connecting people on a very real level, where our learners find comfort and compassion from their coach and speak about them not just as their instructor but as a trusted friend.

My favorite moment was when Kathe taught me the “palabra de Bugs Bunny” joke: the idea that when you’re being truthful you put up three fingers to say “Scout’s honor”, but when Kathe is pulling your leg she puts up two fingers in the shape of bunny ears and says “palabra de Bugs Bunny” with a wink and a smile. It probably doesn’t make sense to you, and that doesn’t matter. For me, it was an experience where I was learning about not just the language but a part of Kathe’s culture… not to mention the fact that I laughed my ass off.

It is this personal connection through learning that motivates us as a company. From the beginning of our engagement with prospective coaches, through how we iterate our product, all the way to how we monitor the learner/coach relationship over years of instruction, Lingo Live is about celebrating the unique culture we foster of connecting people through learning.

And yes, in case you’re wondering, Kathe Solares is still a coach with Lingo Live to this day!
